What kind of people are childcare settings looking for?
They need people who can show their interest in children's learning and development. And who have a professional and caring attitude. You'll need t be committed, energetic, and understand the needs of the children and their families.
Working with children often means working with other professionals and parents. That includes helping them with their child's development. It also involves working as part of a team, undergoing continual training and learning day by day.
To work in a childcare setting you must undergo a criminal records check. This is done via the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). For further information about it visit the Ofsted website.
What’s in it for me?
You'll have a respected, interesting, and demanding career. You'll have a challenging role with the potential to change lives, for the better.
You'll watch children grow and gain confidence as they learn and play, and no two days are ever the same. You will have a crucial role in providing children with:
- a stimulating and challenging environment
- share in their achievements
- and be there for them when they need you
Many childcare settings support flexible working. And many are open term-time only which can enable parents to work whilst their children are at school.
Are you unqualified?
If you have no qualifications there may be some voluntary or paid job opportunities. These will be roles in a childcare setting under the supervision of qualified members of staff. Most employers encourage staff to develop their skills and experience. Childcare courses are available at Harrow and Stanmore Colleges.
If you've worked in childcare and are thinking of returning, you will already know what a worthwhile and enjoyable job this can be.
