The term 'Preparing for Adulthood' (PfA) describes the pathways in preparing young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and other additional support needs for adulthood. It enables them to gain the necessary independence skills to do so.

Preparing for adulthood means preparing for:

  • further/higher education and/or employment – including options for supported internships, apprenticeships, self-employment, volunteering, day activities, college and university
  • skills for independence – this means young people having choice, control and freedom over their lives and the support they have including their accommodation and living arrangements,
  • participating in society, including having friends and supportive relationships, and participating in, and contributing to, the local community
  • being as healthy as possible in adult life with a focus of wellbeing throughout
