What are the Indices of Deprivation?
- The Indices of Deprivation (IoD) measure deprivation in an area. The government uses it as its official measure. Another word for deprivation is poverty.
The IoD consists of seven domains, each with its own scores and ranks:
- Income.
- Employment.
- Education, skills, and training.
- Health deprivation and disability.
- Crime.
- Barriers to housing and services.
- Living Environment.
We use the IoD to:
- Identify areas of deprivation.
- Support funding applications.
- Target resources to certain areas.
- Provide evidence for funding bids.
Each country produces its own version of the IoD. But they cannot be directly compared. This is due to differences in the indicators, the time periods, and the sizes of areas.
