Local highways authorities have a duty to consult members of the public before felling street trees. This excludes cases of hazardous trees and certain other exemptions.
This ensures local people can express their views over the proposed management of street trees in their locality. The duty aims to make the decision-making process more transparent and considerate of the views of local people.
