Rapid Charging points: a further boost for Electric Vehicles in Harrow

Rapid charging points to be introduced

In our drive to help residents and businesses who have or want electric vehicles, last night (Thursday 15 February) Cllrs approved the introduction of rapid charging points in council car parks and on street parking.

It means we can offer faster charging points for owners of electric vehicles travelling longer distances and those who need to charge quickly. It’s also a step in the right direction with decarbonisation, and greener travel in the borough.

This comes in addition to the 225 EV charging points to be installed on lamppost columns this year following government funding. There are 30 currently across the borough and around 3,500 electric vehicles in Harrow. The Council anticipates this will increase to more than 9,500 by 2026. Like the rest of London, Harrow is seeing a growth and demand for electric vehicles and our strategy seeks to improve our offer to help both residents and the environment.

Cllr Anjana Patel, cabinet member for highways, infrastructure and community safety said:

“This is a boost for electric vehicle charging in Harrow. Many people and businesses are making decisions about switching to electric vehicles. We know there is a demand, and we’re making it easier to help them to make that transition.

“There’s already a lot of work taking place and I am pleased we are making great progress on our flagship action to roll out EV charging. This includes 225 chargers being installed on residential lamp post this year, and there is more in the pipeline.

“In our wider plans of improving our environment for a cleaner borough, this will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve Harrow’s air quality.”

The council will now look at procuring the provision of a reliable, accessible network of electric vehicle charging infrastructure throughout the borough.
