Joint statement from the newly appointed policing lead for Harrow, Superintendent Zubin Writer and Leader of the Council, Cllr Paul Osborn:
“Wednesday was a particularly demanding day for policing with the threat of far-right and counter demonstrations in Harrow. This along with a lot of misinformation being shared on social media unfortunately spread fear and anxiety amongst many of our residents.
“We spoke to faith leaders and a large number of our residents to understand their concerns and reassure them. A policing plan was developed to ensure that we were able to rapidly deploy a large police presence in Harrow to ensure public safety and deal with any violence. This alongside a huge number of community engagement visits from local policing teams. We also used our social media platforms to keep people informed and to try and correct misinformation.
“Police dealt with all incidents that arose, which ensured there was no serious disorder. We would like to thank everyone from our officers, and partners, to our businesses, community groups and residents for listening to the advice and information shared by us to stay safe and out of trouble. We were also able to use the borough's CCTV cameras to ensure we were aware of what was happening throughout Harrow.
“Our strong community relations and partnership working demonstrated to those bent on instilling fear, inciting violence and bringing dis-harmony to our borough, that should they try, they will be met with the full force of the law.
“Police officers and council workers will continue to reassure and engage with residents and you will continue to see police presence in the borough over the next few days. All instances of criminal activity or hate crime should be reported to the police.
“We are incredibly honoured and proud of our colleagues who are committed to protecting our communities.”
