Harrow’s Heroes - celebrating our community heroes

HH 24 Winners

Last night, Harrow’s community stars gathered for the much-anticipated Harrow’s Heroes Awards.

  • 11 crowned winners of this year’s awards
  • Hundreds of inspiring stories of courage, determination and kindness were heard
  • Bipin Dattani - Health and Wellbeing Award, and Volunteer of the Year award winner

A spectacular evening celebrating the incredible achievements and tireless dedication of the volunteers who make our borough truly shine.

More than 100 guests, including finalists, generous sponsors and dignitaries attended the event at the stunning Great Barn at Headstone Manor for an unforgettable night. The inspiring evening saw 11 awards handed out.

It was Bipin Dattani, who won both the Health and Wellbeing Award and Volunteer of the year for Award for his tireless work in raising awareness about diabetes.

He has been volunteering for many years and has developed the Diabetes Community Club to provide education to people to manage diabetes via NHS Know Diabetes. He has also been delivering diabetes digital inclusion classes for digitally excluded people. People who have attended these his classes not only support each other, but they are more confident in managing their own health.

He goes over and beyond to help many people, in particular older people who have struggled to find support. An example is of 90 year old resident who since joining his group is not only competent with technology, but helps others to learn.

Bipin Dattani said:

“It is a great honour to win not just one award but two awards. This  means a lot to me and I am still taking it all in. Diabetes is prevalent in Harrow, and I am passionate about making sure people have access to information and advice that helps them manage their health. I’d like to congratulate everyone - it was a great pleasure to meet many worthy finalists and to see their work recognised.”

The much loved local choir group Indie Choir ended the night with a special performance with songs including All The Small Things, One Day Like This and Heroes.

Cllr Janet Mote, Cabinet Member for Community and Culture said:

“What a fantastic evening with our local heroes. Congratulations to all our finalists and winners of this year’s Harrows Heroes awards.

“The awards showcase the best of Harrow and I am so proud to be a part of this special evening. It is so important that we give recognition to the contribution of ordinary people who go out of their way to make a difference to Harrow People and the wider community.

“We’ve had some quality nominations this year, and it’s clear their actions not only put our residents and communities first – but they help change lives, improve local communities and make life that extra bit better for people.

“On behalf of the London Borough of Harrow, I’d like to thank all our volunteers for all that they do.”
