Harrow Leisure Centre’s main pool, learner pool, sauna and steam facilities reopen to the public on Monday after a six-month closure for urgent safety ceiling repairs.
Councillor Janet Mote, Portfolio Holder for Community and Culture, said:
“I’m absolutely delighted that we are once again able to welcome children and adults back into the swimming pool for their lessons, exercise or just to have some fun.
“The health and safety of our residents will always come first and, while I know people have missed their swims, making sure they can do so safely will always be our priority. We said we would reopen in September, and I’m pleased we have kept that promise to everyone.”
The pools’ operator, Everyone Active offered alternative venues to swimming clubs during the closure and regular users had the option of freezing their membership while the facilities were out of action.
John Sewell, Contract Manager at Everyone Active, said:
"We're thrilled to welcome our community back to the facilities. We know it's a much-loved and popular facility, and we're pleased to be able to reopen the facility for all members of the family to enjoy as we enter the new school year.”
The repairs carried out were to the hangers that support the suspended ceiling above the swimming pool. This type of repair is not unusual in a humid and warm environment. The nature of the repair to the ceiling which is located high above the swimming pool means that completing the repair was a complex process which needed careful planning to ensure that it was completed safely.
