Three month update shows exciting progress on corner of underused carpark

  • Freestanding shipping containers installed to be fitted out as flexible workspaces and display units for hire for artists and business start-ups

  • Main leisure space taking shape under one roof

  • Project will revitalise area and improve pedestrian access to Station Road

Pass along Greenhill Way this summer and you can’t fail to notice the landscape is changing – with orange shipping containers now lifted into place to create a new home for arts, creative businesses and entrepreneurs in Harrow.

Leader of the Council Cllr Paul Osborn and Cllr Norman Stevenson, Portfolio holder for business culture and economy recently donned hardhats and high-vis to see for themselves how much has been done since construction work began in June.

The project is Meanwhile Use – it should be in place for at least five years and maybe longer if it is a success. 13 flexible workspace units will be created, as well as a large leisure space with proposals for a café offer for public use. The units are centred around an open square and raised walkway inviting visitors to explore an outdoor art gallery, featuring sculpture plinths, glazed displays and covered exhibition spaces.

Cllr Stevenson said:

“It’s wonderful to see this taking shape and transforming this part of the borough. Very soon we expect to see it kitted out and welcoming the first tenants on board. People have told us they need affordable rental space like we’re building and I can’t wait to see what fledgling businesses grow here.”

Contractors Sullivan Brothers Construction Ltd and Jan Kattein Architects were on hand to talk through how the plans are shaping up, with work expected to be completed in the new year.

Councillors unanimously approved the revamp of underused Greenhill Way carpark to revitalise Harrow back in January. The site still offers 200 car parking spaces, and one hour’s free parking.

The project has been funded by a UK Government programme which aims to renew and reshape town centres and high streets in a way that improves experience, drives growth and ensures future sustainability.

There will be an external art display (mounted to a plinth) within a central courtyard area, and another art display on the roof of the gallery unit.
