We are saddened to learn about the death of our Former Mayor and Councillor, Christine Bednell who passed away on Tuesday 3 December.
She is Harrow’s longest serving Cllr who retired after 47 years in 2018. Between 1968 to 2018 she has represented residents of Wealdstone North, Harrow West, Ridgeway and Stanmore Park.
Councillor Bednell was elected as Mayor of Harrow in 1986. She was a champion for children, young people and social services. Her passion to make a difference allowed her to hold Portfolios for Children’s Services, Lifelong Learning and Cultural Services, Issues facing Older People, Schools and Children’s Development.
The Council marked Cllr Bednell’s 45 years' service in 2016. Since the creation of the London Borough of Harrow in 1964, no other Councillor has given such long service. Her outstanding public service was recognised by becoming the first woman ever to receive the freedom of Harrow in 2018.
Councillor Bednell was a popular Member across the council and respected by residents and communities she served. She will be remembered for her tireless work in improving the lives of young people in Harrow.
Leader of the Council, Cllr Paul Osborn said:
“I am deeply saddened to hear about the death of Christine Bednell. She had an exceptional record of service for Harrow people which spanned more than 40 years and I am honoured to have worked closely with her as a Cllr during that time. I always admired Christine’s passion and drive to make a difference and stand up for residents.
“She will be missed by everyone and we send our heartfelt condolences to her family and friends during this difficult time ”
