A special summer programme is now open for young Ukrainian people who have resettled in the borough.
We’re working with Harrow based creatives Unique Community to deliver the Stork Project. This connects young Ukrainians through performing arts, and helps them settle in their new home. From 22 April, 7 to 16 year olds who have settled in Harrow can take part in free weekly performing arts workshops and group trips.
The classes are fun, interactive and include a mix of activities, from acting and dancing to singing and games in a safe environment. It’s a great chance for them to get creative, learn new skills, and make friends. Families can find out more and sign-up at www.uniquecommunity.org.
Cllr Janet Mote, Cabinet Member for Community and Culture said:
" This scheme does incredible work to help young people from Ukraine feel at home in Harrow. Through the magic of performing arts, children can build confidence, make friends, and truly feel part of our community. I encourage all Ukrainian families to take up this wonderful opportunity. “
This work is part of the council’s Homes for Ukraine scheme. It helps Ukrainian families find sponsors in the borough and works with partners to help them adapt to their new life in Harrow.
Performing arts classes are already helping these young people adjust to feel part of the community and make new friends.
Anna, who has been taking part in the Stork Project since moving to the UK said:
“These performing arts classes really help me to release my emotions. It was really difficult to tell people about my problems and how I really felt, even my friends.
“But through art it was easier, more relaxing and like therapy to express all my feelings.”
Since launching the scheme in March 2022, 200 households in Harrow have opened their homes to welcome more than 400 Ukrainians who fled the war. While this has made a significant impact, there is still a pressing need for more sponsors. By opening your home, you can provide a safe haven for families who have been forced to flee their homeland.
