Transport for London (TfL) - Travel for Life

Travel for Life (formerly STARS) is a Transport for London accreditation programme. It recognises the activities schools are undertaking to promote walking, wheeling, scooting, skating and cycling. STARS supports pupils’ wellbeing, helps to reduce congestion at the school gates and improves road safety and air quality.

28 schools in Harrow take part in the scheme.

There are 3 levels of accreditation (Gold, Silver and Bronze).

Travel for Life benefits school communities in many ways, including:

  1. Improving the mental health and wellbeing of students
  2. Supporting young people to include physical activity in their daily routines
  3. Encouraging sustainable daily journeys as a lifelong habit
  4. Reducing congestion and air pollution around schools

Travel for Life schools see on average a 6% reduction in the number of trips made by car to school. Gold and Silver accredited schools achieve up to a 12% reduction. To find out more, email travel.planning@harrow.gov.uk

School Streets

A School Street involves a temporary road closure outside a school during the beginning and end of the school day. Access is restricted to authorised vehicles only. This initiative is designed to improve safety and enhance the road environment for pedestrians and cyclists, making the area more accessible and welcoming for all. By reducing the perceived risks of road traffic, a School Streets encourage more of the school community to choose sustainable travel options.
There are 3 school streets in Harrow:

  • Grimsdyke School
  • Newton Farm Primary
  • Park High School
