Our service supports mainstream schools and colleges to meet the needs of autistic pupils who have an Education, Health and Care Plan.
Services are available to educational settings in Harrow. Or to settings outside of Harrow if attended by a Harrow resident with an EHC Plan.
They also deliver training programmes for parents.
Services for schools and colleges
We believe that autistic children should get high quality education that meets their individual needs.
We focus on training and working with school staff and other professionals. We offer different ways to help children and young people fulfil their potential. We help adapt the curriculum to make it accessible. Alternative teaching strategies are carefully identified and guidance is provided.
Our services include:
- Information gathering and sharing between relevant parties
- Liaison with parents and others
- Training for teachers and teaching assistants in specialist aspects of the role
- Planning/coaching with teaching and support staff
- Support to access the curriculum
- Attending meetings and specific annual reviews
- Support for transfer and transitions
- Work for the Local Authority, such as involvement in tribunals or SEND panels.
Autism Specialist Teachers ‘Traded’ visits
Schools can purchase Autism Specialist Teacher visits. These may be used for
- enhanced levels of support around children and young people with an EHCP and a diagnosis of autism
- support work around children with significant social communication and social interaction needs who do not yet have an EHCP
- other organisational development work, staff coaching, and training in schools
- family support work
- support around children and young people with an EHCP with autism as the primary need, who are attending mainstream schools outside of Harrow
- Schools are asked to commit to purchasing a yearly quota of AST sessions to be delivered from September 2024. You can purchase sessions for 2024/25.

EarlyBird+ Parent Programme
We deliver the National Autistic Society (NAS) EarlyBird+ parent programme three times a year. This provides training to parents of autistic children aged 4 to 9. To join the waiting list for the EarlyBird+ programme, email educationalpsychology.services@harrow.gov.uk
TeenLife Parent Programme
We deliver the National Society (NAS) TeenLife parent programme. This provides training to parents of autistic children aged 10 to 16.
