The Children's Sensory Team (CST)

Wellbeing for children with hearing needs and / or vision needs

It is important to monitor and support the mental health and wellbeing of Children and Young People with hearing and vision needs. We aim to build strong relationships with Children and Young People. We consider how their unique communication and sensory needs affect their emotional development.

We help settings and practitioners create nurturing and inclusive environments. Children and Young People should feel safe, understood, and valued in settings. We achieve this by multi-disciplinary working and/ or signposting to tailored support services.

The CST advocates for Children/Young People with hearing and vision needs. We promote social interaction, self-expression, and community participation. By working together, family members, educators and peers contribute to developing emotional resilience. This will help them to navigate challenges and develop a positive sense of self.

Act now if you have concerns about a Child or Young Person's wellbeing. Early action can make a big difference in their health and happiness.

How to support a child or young person

There are several steps you can take to ensure a Child/Young Person gets the support they need:

  • Open Communication: Start with an open and honest conversation. Encourage them to share their feelings. Listen without judgment. This can help you understand their concerns and provide reassurance.
  • Create a Supportive Environment: Ensure the environment is supportive and nurturing. Encourage healthy routines, such as regular physical activity, balanced nutrition, and adequate sleep. Engage in activities that promote positive mental health, like mindfulness or family outings.
  • Stay Informed: Keep informed about the factors that affect children's wellbeing. Understanding common issues and  the signs to look out for can help you to support your child.
  • Seek Professional Help: If you see persistent changes in behaviour or mood, consider professional help. This could be from a:
    • teacher
    • school counsellor
    • CST teacher
    • educational or child psychologist
    • GP
    • other health care professional, who can give guidance and refer you to appropriate services.
  • Engage with Schools: Schools often have resources and support for pupil's wellbeing. Speak with teachers or school counsellors about any concerns.
  • Contact Local Services:  You can also reach out to your local council's children's social care team if you believe your child is at risk.
