Special treatment licence

What is a Special treatment licence?

You need to apply for a Special treatment licence if you own or manage premises offering any of the following treatments:

  • massage
  • manicure and pedicure
  • facials
  • nail extensions
  • tattooing
  • body piercing

For a full list of treatments please see our Special treatments list.

Licences are granted for up to a period of 18 months. We have standard conditions which are applied to every licence granted. In some cases more special conditions may be imposed.

Exemptions

Belonging to some groups lets you avoid needing a licence. Examples of some of the organisations which are exempt are:

  • The British Acupuncture & Holistic Medicine Association
  • The British Acupuncture Council
  • The International Federation of Aroma Therapists
  • The International Federation of Reflexologists
  • The Shiatsu Society UK.

If you are a member of an exempted organisation, you still need to inform us and provide evidence of your membership status.

View a list of practitioners who are exempt. To apply for an exemption from a Special treatments licence, please email licensing@harrow.gov.uk.

Health and safety at work

If you do not need a licence, you still need to follow the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974
